Background: The cornerstone laying of the Detroit Masonic Temple on September 18, 1922, was a historic event distinguished by extraordinary ceremonial rarities and massive civic engagement. Timed precisely to mark the 129th anniversary of George Washington laying the United States Capitol cornerstone on September 18, 1793, the ceremony featured the priceless, historic silver trowel that Washington himself had used for the Capitol event—specially loaned for the occasion as a deeply revered artifact. Presided over by Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby before a crowd of tens of thousands, the ritual culminated in the sealing of a time capsule within the granite block containing rare contemporary artifacts, historical Masonic documents, local coins, and period newspapers. This monumental ceremony formally set the foundation for what would become the largest Masonic Temple in the world, designed by architect George D. Mason, blending immense fraternal heritage with rare national history.
