1986 premiere of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" ad...
Item # 729519
·
TELEVISION TIMES from the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Times, Aug. 31, 1986
* "The Oprah Winfrey Show" promotional ad (premiere)
This insert acts like a TV Guide for the following week in the Los Angeles area with a front cover notice on the upcoming "Jerry Lewis Telethon" which was televised the following day on Sept. 1, 1986.
But page 3 has a very notable promotional advertisement on the upcoming premiere of "THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW" which was to begin on Sept. 8, 1986. Great to have from the home of the entertainment industry.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because there was really no reason to save it at the time.
Complete Television Times with all 36 pages, measures 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, in great, mint condition.
Background: This August 31, 1986 Los Angeles Times Television Times full-page notice is a exceptionally rare artifact of modern broadcast ephemera, printed exactly eight days before The Oprah Winfrey Show made its national syndication premiere on September 8, 1986. Representing the exact moment King World Productions introduced Winfrey to the competitive Los Angeles market—one of the largest broadcast regions in the country—the ad catches her right at the tipping point of her shift from a regional Chicago favorite to a national phenomenon following her Oscar-nominated performance in The Color Purple. Full-page newspaper promotional inserts from major metropolitan daily papers like the L.A. Times are notoriously scarce due to the fragile, acidic nature of vintage newsprint, which was almost universally discarded or recycled within days of publication. Because pop-culture collectors typically value pre-broadcast promotional material higher than post-launch merchandise, an intact, full-page launch ad targeting a major TV market stands as a museum-worthy time capsule marking the dawn of the highest-rated talk show in American television history.
