NEW YORK TIMES, March 15, 1862  The front page features a very large Civil War map headed: "THE FIELD OF OPERATIONS FROM TENNESSEE TO THE GULF OF MEXICO" with the other heading noting: "Map Showing the Entire Line of Gen. Halleck's Action in Tennessee & the Gulf States, from Memphis to Knoxville, from Nashville to New Orleans and Fort Pickens---Showing, also, all the Railroads Intersecting the Country, and the Entire Military Line of the Mississippi River." 
But perhaps the most interesting report is one that fascinates collectors, in this case an inconspicuous notice concerning a theatrical production at the Mary Provost Theater in New York, featuring John Wilkes Booth.
The notice mentions: "...Engagement and first appearance in New York of the young American tragedian, J. WILKES BOOTH, whose success in the great characters he intends to represent, during his engagement in this city, has elicited the wonder and admiration of large and enthusiastic audiences in all of the principal cities of the United States, and has been equaled only by his father, the famous Junius Brutus Booth, will take place on MONDAY EVENING, March 17, when he will appear as RICHARD III, supported by..." with a bit more.
It's always terrific to find reports of notables in history--both famous and infamous--before they became more widely known to the world.
