Background: On May 28, 1977, the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Southgate, Kentucky, claimed 165 lives and injured over 200, becoming the third-deadliest nightclub fire in American history. The catastrophe began around 8:30 PM inside an unoccupied room known as the Zebra Room—most likely triggered by faulty electrical wiring—where it smoldered undetected for nearly half an hour before bursting into the main corridors after oxygen rushed in from a opened door. Smoke and toxic fumes rapidly engulfed the sprawling, overcrowded complex, which was hosting more than 2,400 patrons over Memorial Day weekend—far exceeding its legal capacity. The disaster reached its peak in the crowded Cabaret Room, where over 1,200 people waiting for a performance were alerted too late due to the absence of a central fire alarm system; as the power failed, panicked patrons surged toward inadequate exit routes that quickly bottlenecked, leading to mass fatal smoke inhalation. The sheer magnitude of the tragedy served as a landmark catalyst for American building safety, forcing nationwide overhauls of commercial fire codes that mandated central fire alarms, automatic sprinkler systems, flame-retardant interior materials, and strictly enforced capacity limits in public assembly venues.
