Background: The April 29, 1977 issue of the Los Angeles Times provided readers with an exclusive pre-opening preview of Disneyland’s $20 million Tomorrowland overhaul, framing Space Mountain not merely as an exciting coaster, but as a technological marvel that permanently transformed the Anaheim skyline. Reporting on the upcoming May 27 launch, the paper highlighted Imagineering’s custom-engineered 118-foot futuristic cone structure and detailed how the attraction would simulate deep-space flight through pitch-black drops, banking turns, and immersive visual lighting effects—all while topping out at a deceptively fast 32 mph. Beyond the ride itself, the coverage detailed the massive scope of the expanded "Space Complex," which included the new 1,100-seat outdoor Space Stage, the Space Place restaurant, and the multi-level Starcade arcade. Crucially, the issue underscored the sheer scale of Disney’s investment by noting that the complex cost significantly more to construct than the entire original park did in 1955, building immense regional anticipation just weeks before the ride's record-setting Memorial Day debut.
