Sunday CALENDAR SECTION only of the Los Angeles Times, Nov. 25, 1990
* PET SHOP BOYS interview w/ photos
* English synth-pop duo band
* Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant
Often revered as the undisputed "bible" of Hollywood, the Sunday Calendar section occupied a rare space in journalism where a single publication could simultaneously dictate global entertainment trends and govern the inner workings of show business. Today, physical copies are an absolute rarity, largely because they were printed on standard, ephemeral newsprint designed to be devoured and promptly discarded at the end of the week.
Page 61 has a piece by Steve Dennis Hunt headed: "THE PET SHOP BOYS" with two related photos. (see images)
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because there was really no reason to save it at the time.
Provenance note: This issue comes from The Los Angeles Times own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
Complete Calendar section only with all 104 pages, tabloid size, great condition.
Background: The November 25, 1990 issue of the Los Angeles Times Calendar section features a Dennis Hunt profile on The Pet Shop Boys", published during a critical turning point following the release of their introspective fourth album, Behaviour. In the article, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe address the tension between their massive global success and their reputation as detached, cerebral pop stars, openly discussing their shift away from the bombastic Hi-NRG club hits of Introspective toward the lush, melancholy arrangements of tracks like "Being Boring" and "So Hard." Hunt delves into their deliberate avoidance of typical rock star tropes—such as touring during their peak hitmaking years—and captures Tennant’s candid commentary on navigating the AIDS crisis, the fleeting nature of pop stardom, and their desire to craft sophisticated, emotionally resonant pop music that challenged the era's dance music conventions.
