Background: On July 24, 1927, after a brief deliberation, a Franklin County jury returned a guilty verdict against infamous Prohibition-era bootlegger Charles "Charlie" Birger for ordering the contract killing of West City Mayor Joseph Adams. The landmark trial in Benton, Illinois—which saw the judge issue a sentence of death just days later on July 27—marked a pivotal turning point in restoring law and order to Southern Illinois after years of violent gang war between the Birger Gang, the Shelton Brothers Gang, and the Ku Klux Klan. Following a failed appeal, the execution took place on April 19, 1928, when Birger was hanged—entering history as the last public hanging in the state of Illinois.
