Background: The assault on the Yaeju-Dake Escarpment in mid-June 1945 by the U.S. Tenth Army’s 96th Infantry Division stands as a pivotal climax in the Battle of Okinawa, directly shattering the Japanese 32nd Army's final terminal defense on the Kiyamu Peninsula. After the collapse of the primary Shuri Line, General Mitsuru Ushijima withdrew his remaining forces to this 600-foot coral limestone plateau, using its sheer cliffs, interconnected cave networks, and hidden artillery positions to mount a desperate death-stand aimed at inflicting maximum American casualties. By executing a daring night infiltration up the muddy cliff face and employing aggressive "corkscrew and blowtorch" tactics—deploying armored flamethrowers, satchel charges, and gasoline to clear fortified subterranean strongpoints—American forces dismantled the last major barrier covering southern Okinawa.
