Background: July 1, 1997, marks the historic Hong Kong handover, when 156 years of British colonial rule officially ended and sovereignty was transferred to the People's Republic of China, creating the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Symbolized by the midnight ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre where the Union Jack was lowered and China's Five-star Red Flag raised, the event reshaped Asia’s geopolitical landscape under the revolutionary "One Country, Two Systems" governance framework established by the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. Governed by its new mini-constitution, the Basic Law, Hong Kong was guaranteed a high degree of autonomy, preserving its capitalist economy, common law legal system, and civil liberties unchanged for a 50-year transition period until 2047. This handover signified both the grand conclusion of British imperial presence in East Asia and a high-stakes constitutional experiment attempting to integrate a major international financial center into a communist state.
