Background: During his internment at Camp Ashcan in Mondorf-les-Bains in mid-1945, Dr. Hans Frank—the former Governor-General of occupied Poland known as the "Butcher of Poland"—was subjected to psychological evaluations, intense Allied interrogations, and forced screenings of American military footage documenting the liberation of concentration camps like Buchenwald and Dachau. Confronting Frank and top Nazi leaders with these stark visual records broke through their claims of post-war ignorance, providing Allied prosecutors key psychological observations and foundational evidence—later showcased in the film Nazi Concentration Camps at the Nuremberg Trials—that directly triggered Frank’s public breakdown, eventual Catholic conversion, and rare expression of remorse before his execution for war crimes and crimes against humanity in October 1946.
