Background: The tragic 1927 Dole Air Race—and the disappearance of 22-year-old Mildred Doran aboard the biplane Miss Doran alongside pilot John Pedlar and navigator Vilas Knope—marked a pivotal, defining moment in early aviation history by exposing the extreme dangers of early transoceanic flight and accelerating calls for stricter flight safety regulations. As the sole female participant in the 2,400-mile race from Oakland to Honolulu, Doran captured national media attention and challenged prevailing gender norms, courageously declaring that women possessed equal tenacity for long-distance aviation. However, after engine trouble forced an initial return to land, Doran refused to abandon the flight; upon re-entering the air, the aircraft vanished over the Pacific Ocean without a trace. The subsequent search operation deployed 42 U.S. Navy vessels—the largest naval search effort of its time—and ultimately claimed the lives of ten total aviators, including crews from two other participating aircraft. This widespread devastation directly transformed public perception, shifting aviation from a reckless era of high-stakes, unregulated barnstorming competitions toward organized, safety-conscious commercial and naval transatlantic and transpacific navigation.
