Led by hall-of-fame quarterback Joe Montana, who earned his third Super Bowl MVP after throwing a record five touchdown passes—three to wide receiver Jerry Rice—the 49ers established total control early, taking a 27–3 lead into halftime. San Francisco's high-powered West Coast offense operated with surgical precision, racking up 55 points—the highest single-team total in Super Bowl history—and securing a 45-point margin of victory, which remains the largest blowout in championship game history. The commanding win capped off a dominant season for head coach George Seifert, making the 49ers the first team since the late-1970s Pittsburgh Steelers to capture back-to-back Super Bowl titles, solidifying their legacy as the premier dynasty of the 1980s.
