Background: The events of March 1933 in Frankfurt am Main served as a critical, localized blueprint for the systematic destruction of Jewish life that would soon engulf the rest of Nazi Germany. By forcing the resignation of Mayor Ludwig Landmann, the Nazi regime demonstrated that even the most prominent, deeply integrated Jewish public officials could be instantly stripped of power, signaling the total collapse of Weimar democratic protections. The aggressive, unauthorized boycotts and professional purges carried out by local SA groups during this month proved that grassroots antisemitic violence would not only be tolerated by the new government but actively weaponized to accelerate the exclusion of Jews from economic and civic life. Ultimately, March 1933 shattered any illusion of safety for Frankfurt’s Jewish community—the second-largest in the country—triggering the first major wave of forced emigration and marking the precise moment where centuries of German-Jewish integration were violently and permanently severed.
