Background: The assassination of John Roselli was executed with a level of calculated savagery designed to terrorize any other potential mob informants. After being lured to a yacht under the pretense of a social gathering, the 71-year-old Roselli was ambushed and asphyxiated. To conceal the crime, his killers used a heavy-duty saw to sever his legs at the knees, allowing his body to be crammed and bent into a standard 55-gallon steel fuel drum. The killers then wrapped heavy logging chains around the exterior of the barrel and drilled holes into the metal, intending for the container to sink to the deep ocean floor and fill with water. However, they underestimated the biological process of decay: as Roselli's body decomposed, the trapped gases created enough buoyancy to overcome the weight of the chains, forcing the gruesome, waterlogged steel coffin to bob to the surface of Dumfoundling Bay, where it was eventually hooked by passing fishermen.
