California illustrations from 1888...

Item # 727587 ·

THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, England, May 5, 1888  This issue offers a magnificent glimpse into the rapid growth and natural beauty of the American West as viewed through a Victorian lens.
The back page features four sketches: "California Sketches: Mammoth Trees; Rock and Mountain Scenery." One of the sketches is of the famous Wawona Redwood Tree", and what looks like a side view of Half-Dome overlooking Yosemite Valley (although this is not confirmed). Additional full-page illustrations include: "Views of Lower California", "Sketches In Lower California: A Fruitful Land", and "Views in Upper California". Other illustrations from throughout the world are found throughout.

The historical significance of these illustrations lies in their role in fueling the late-1880s California "Land Boom" and shaping global perceptions of the American frontier. During this period, the arrival of competing transcontinental railroads triggered an unprecedented wave of migration and real estate speculation across Southern California, transforming places like Pasadena from quiet settlements into booming agricultural and cultural hubs. By publishing these intricate sketches, The Illustrated London News—the world's premier graphic weekly—exported the romantic allure of the American West directly to a fascinated European audience. These images perfectly document the transition of California from an isolated frontier into a highly desired, rapidly developing paradise.

Other news, cultural reports, and detailed illustrations of global events from the height of the British Empire are found throughout.

Complete in 24 pages, approximately 16 x 11.75 inches, in very nice condition.
