The sinking of the RMS Lusitania... Leo Frank trial update...

Item # 727369 ·

THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, Georgia, May 11, 1915  This issue captures America wrestling with its response to a historic catastrophe just four days after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. The front page features a prominent two-column headline detailing the nation's fragile diplomatic stance: "No War for United States, But Germany to Be Shown Injustice Done to Mankind By the Lusitania Horror", which includes multiple subheads and a related photo of notable passengers.

The historical significance of this coverage lies in the immense political tightrope the United States was walking during this pre-American involvement period of World War I. When the British luxury ocean liner was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 on May 7, 1915, it sank off the coast of Ireland in just 18 minutes, claiming 1,198 lives. This report perfectly documents the precise moment American public opinion permanently hardened against Germany. While President Woodrow Wilson sought a peaceful, diplomatic solution to hold Germany accountable rather than immediately declaring war, the outrage generated by this disaster laid the critical psychological groundwork that would ultimately draw the United States into the global conflict two years later.

An additional front page article provides an update on the Leo Frank murder trail. Nice to have articles re: both historic events together on the front page.

Other news of the day, with much additional coverage on the European war (WWI), is found throughout.

Complete in 12 pages, light browning, a little margin wear, otherwise in good condition.
