Background: On September 28, 1938, Chicago Cubs player-manager and future Hall of Fame catcher Gabby Hartnett hit the legendary "Homer in the Gloamin'" at Wrigley Field, a walk-off solo home run that stands as one of the most cinematic and consequential moments in baseball history. Facing the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates in the bottom of the ninth inning with the score tied 5–5 and two outs, Hartnett smashed an 0–2 pitch into the hazy left-field bleachers just as the umpires were preparing to call the game on account of total darkness, as the stadium lacked artificial lights. The historical significance of this event cannot be overstated: it capped off a furious late-season surge by the Cubs, leapfrogging them past the Pirates into first place to effectively clinch the National League pennant and alter the trajectory of the 1938 season. Beyond the standings, the frantic scene of thousands of ecstatic fans storming the field into the gathering twilight to mob Hartnett before he could even touch home plate captured the romantic, unscripted essence of early baseball, immortalizing the twilight blast as an enduring symbol of sports lore.
