CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, July 20, 1921 When it comes to reports on the infamous "Black Sox" 1919 World Series, it would be difficult to find a better newspaper for such reports.
As the trial of those indicted continues, the front page has a banner headline: "BARES WORLD SERIES SALE" with subheads: "Purchased And Purchasers of Classic Named" "$20,000 a Game Was Price, Burns Says".
The text begins with a quote attributed to indicted player Eddie Cicotte: "I will throw the first game if I have to throw the ball over the fence in the Cincinnati ball park to do it."
The balance of the report takes a full column & continues on page 2. Near the beginning is: "With the defendants n their toes for the first time since the 'Black Sox' trial opened & the fans in crowded courtroom hanging breathlessly on his every word, Bill Burns, former White Sox pitcher, told the jury yesterday his story of how the 1919 baseball classic was thrown for $100,000...". with much more.
Great to have this bold, banner headline on the trial--and in a Chicago newspaper.
Complete in 26 pages, address stamp above the masthead, some dirtiness to the front page only, good condition.
