Background: In 1868, President Andrew Johnson became the first U.S. president to be impeached. He was charged primarily for violating the Tenure of Office Act by removing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton without Senate approval. The House of Representatives impeached him, but the Senate acquitted Johnson by just one vote short of the two-thirds needed to convict. The trial reflected deep political conflict over Reconstruction and presidential powers, and Johnson remained in office until his term ended in 1869.
