Background: The coup of August 25, 1930, led by Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro, marked the definitive end of the Oncenio, the eleven-year autocratic modernization of Peru under Augusto B. Leguía, and signaled a turbulent shift toward military populism. Triggered by the devastating impact of the Great Depression, which collapsed Peru's export economy, and fueled by military resentment over the 1929 Treaty of Lima with Chile, the uprising began in Arequipa before successfully forcing Leguía’s resignation and subsequent imprisonment. This event was historically significant because it broke the long-standing dominance of the traditional "Civilista" elite and ushered in an era of intense ideological conflict between the military and the newly formed APRA (American Popular Revolutionary Alliance). The transition transformed Peruvian politics from a system of aristocratic oversight into a more volatile, mass-participation struggle, setting the stage for decades of institutional instability and defining the role of the armed forces as a central arbiter in the nation's governance.
