background: On March 29, 1985, Sandra Good effectively stalled her own release from the Federal Reformatory for Women in Alderson, West Virginia, by adamantly refusing to accept any parole conditions that would distance her from Charles Manson. While she was technically eligible for release at that time after serving ten years of a fifteen-year sentence for mailing death threats, Good remained a defiant devotee, explicitly rejecting the parole board's requirement that she renounce Manson and his "Family" to prove her rehabilitation. She famously declared her continued loyalty to his environmental philosophy (ATWA) and her intent to remain in contact with him, creating a legal stalemate that lasted several months. Because she refused to comply with the board's desire for her to live a quiet life in California near Manson's prison, the authorities eventually bypassed her "refusal" by imposing a mandatory "banishment" condition; she was paroled later that year in December 1985, but only on the strict condition that she be exiled to Vermont to serve out her supervised release far from the Manson circle.
