background: The USS Squalus sank during a test dive on May 23, 1939, off New Hampshire due to flooding from a valve failure, killing 26 crew members. A groundbreaking rescue using the McCann Rescue Chamber saved 33 survivors. The submarine was later raised, repaired, and recommissioned as the USS Sailfish, serving in World War II.
