Item # 723781
April 25, 1903
THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, California, April 25, 1903
* William Kissam Vanderbilt
* Anne Harriman Rutherford
* Wedding - Weds - Marries
The top of the front page has a one column heading: "VANDERBILT WEDS WEDS MRS. RUTHERFORD" with subhead. (see) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 8 pages, small library stamps within the masthead, a few small binding holes along the spine, generally very nice.
background: This edition of The Evening Tribune is a remarkable historical artifact, not only for its survivability in the "wood pulp" era but for its front-page coverage of a pivotal moment in Gilded Age social history. The marriage of William Kissam Vanderbilt to Anne Harriman Rutherford on April 25, 1903, in London, represented a sophisticated "second act" for two of America’s most prominent figures; Vanderbilt, the railroad heir who had survived a scandalous divorce from Alva Smith, and Anne, a twice-widowed socialite who would later become a renowned philanthropist and a founding member of New York’s Colony Club. Finding an eight-page complete issue from this period in non-fragile condition is exceedingly rare, as the high lignin content in 1903 newsprint typically leads to "red rot" or extreme brittleness. This specific San Diego imprint highlights how the personal lives of the "Vanderbilt Dynasty" were treated as national—and even international—news, providing a preserved window into the high-society fascination that gripped the American public at the turn of the century.
