Mention of the Great Plague... Pirates... Issue #40...

Item # 723335 ·

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, April 2, 1666  This is an extremely early issue of the world's oldest continually published newspaper, having begun just the year prior in 1665 and is still publishing today. This is issue #40 (the 17th titled The London Gazette).
As was the typical format for this newspaper it has various reports from many locations throughout Europe, many of which are military in nature. At the time of this printing the Great Plague was still ravaging Europe, particularly England. The front page has a brief mention of it: "...The Venetians are busily trucking with the French, Hollanders, and their allies; to which purpose they gave out that the Plague was in several parts of Germany...". Also a mention of: "...two ships...confirms the success of our Plantation in the Barbadoes against the Dutch." and also on the front page: "...arrived...who touched at Algiers, she reports that those Pyrates have of late taken & destroyed six French ships...".
Great to have a period mention of the Plague and from 5 months before the Great Fire of London.
Complete as a single sheet issue, 6 3/4 by 11 inches, very nice, clean condition.
