Background:On September 17, 1938, Willie Turnesa won the U.S. Amateur at Oakmont Country Club by defeating B. Patrick “Pat” Abbott 8 & 7 in the 36‑hole final. His victory was powered by a superb short game — he escaped from 13 bunkers and one-putted 15 greens during the match, earning him the nickname “Willie the Wedge.
