Background:Paul Waner, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Hall of Fame outfielder, recorded his 3,000th career hit on June 19, 1942. At age 39, Waner achieved the milestone while playing for the Boston Braves in a game against his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, at Forbes Field. He singled off Pirates pitcher Rip Sewell in the fifth inning to become only the seventh player in Major League Baseball history to reach 3,000 hits at that time. Known as “Big Poison,” Waner was celebrated for his consistent hitting and graceful play, finishing his 20-year career with 3,152 hits and a lifetime batting average of .333.
