Note: The Kweilin Incident occurred on August 24, 1938, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, when Japanese fighter planes attacked a China National Aviation Corporation Douglas DC-2 airliner near Kweilin (now Guilin). The plane, piloted by American Hugh Leslie Woods, was forced to land in a rice paddy and was then strafed and bombed, killing 10 of the 14 people on board. This marked the first deliberate attack on a civilian airliner in history, sparking international outrage and highlighting Japan’s increasing use of air power against civilian targets in China.
