Background:The first airplane landing on a warship occurred on January 18, 1911, when civilian pilot Eugene B. Ely successfully landed a Curtiss biplane on a temporary wooden platform built on the USS Pennsylvania, which was anchored in San Francisco Bay. This historic event demonstrated the feasibility of shipboard aircraft operations. Eleven years later in 1922, Lieutenant Commander Godfrey Chevalier made the first successful landing on a moving aircraft carrier, the USS Langley, marking a crucial step in the development of naval aviation by proving that planes could safely operate from a ship underway.
