Background: The Wallingford tornado struck Connecticut in 1878, killing 29 people and injuring over 70, making it the deadliest tornado in the state's history. Likely an F4 in strength, it carved a half-mile-wide path through Wallingford, destroying homes, churches, and railroads. The storm caused massive destruction in a short span and brought lasting attention to the risks of severe weather in New England.
