An African-American newspaper, with 'Rube' Foster content...

Item # 716985 ·

THE FREEMAN - A NATIONAL ILLUSTRATED COLORED NEWSPAPER, Indianapolis, Indiana, May 21, 1910  A quite uncommon newspaper meant for the African-American reader. Logically much of the content is themed on African-American news, events, etc.
Page 4 has a great article: "Gala Day In Baseball at Chicago" which begins: "If any fan doubts that 'Rube' Foster has not one of the best teams in the country, he should have been at their first game on last Sunday...."with more on the famed Rube Foster.
Foster, considered by historians to have been perhaps the best African-American pitcher of the first decade of the 1900s, also founded and managed the Chicago American Giants, one of the most successful black baseball teams of the pre-integration era. Most notably, he organized the Negro National League, the first long-lasting professional league for African-American ballplayers, which operated from 1920 to 1931. He is known as the "father of Black Baseball."
There are many other reports on baseball.
Eight pages, some archival mends at margins & folds, generally in nice condition. Very decorative masthead.
