Moments before his very famous photo?
LOS ANGELES EXAMINER, Feb. 23, 1945 Here is a fantastic item on the iconic "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" published the same day of the famous event.
The front page contains a large photo of U.S. Marines working their way up Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, with banner headline: "MARINES WIN MOUNT SURIBACHI, PLANT U.S. FLAG ON IWO VOLCANO".
The photo shows the desperate situation of the Marines on the Mount. The reference of the flag planting is to the iconic and Pulitzer Prize winning photograph by Joseph Rosenthal taken on this very day. Note that this large photo was taken by Rosenthal, very likely several minutes before he would take the more famous photo.
Almost all of page 3 is taken up with 2 more Rosenthal photos as well.
The complete first section with pages 1-10, nice condition.
