Background:In March of 1861, Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, remained under Union control led by Major Robert Anderson. The fort faced a severe supply crisis, placing President Lincoln in a difficult position: reinforcing it risked sparking war with the Confederacy, while abandoning it might embolden secessionists. Although no action was taken on that specific date, Lincoln decided by March 29 to resupply the fort, a move that heightened tensions. This decision culminated in the Confederate bombardment on April 12-13, 1861, forcing the Union garrison to surrender and evacuate on April 14, 1861, an event that ignited the American Civil War.
