THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, May 27, 1777 A page 2 item notes: "...the cruisers from this island (Antigua) have been very successful against the Americans & almost knocked up their trade by the many captures they have taken."
An inside page has some reports from America, and another page includes: "...a provincial Captain named Martinhad, near Morristown, been shot by a scouting party of the Rebels who mistook him for an English officer." The back page has reporting from the House of Commons in London includes some discussion of the tax situation in America.
Also on the back page is: "I hope peace will be restored to America this summer...know for truth that the rebels are laying down their arms in great numbers; within this fortnight past no less than 3000 have come in to New York & received the full value of their arms & took the oath of allegiance to his Britannic Majesty. General Lee we have here prisoner; Gen. Washington is said to be delirious; Hancock has fled the country. No person will take the paper money of the Congress. In a word their credit is broke, they are on the brink of ruin..." & a bit more.
