Straw vote shows to be Washington elected President...

Item # 716577 ·
THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL, Boston, Jan. 31, 1789  The front page has a full column letter which in part gives some discussion of amendments to the new Constitution.
Page 2 has a great item concerning Washington being "elected" President. With a Springfield dateline & headed "Anticipation", the report reads: "This day the gentlemen chosen Electors of President and Vice President in the United States, meet in the several states. The whole number being 79. The following is a statement of the votes..." and it shows George Washington received 79, John Adams 53, and George Clinton 26, followed by: "The two former are therefore chosen President and Vice President of the United States."
The formal vote would actually be counted on April 6, but the winners were the same.
Four pages, chipping to a portion of the top margin affecting part of the title, various archival mends at margins and the spine. A bit fragile & should be handled carefully.

Item from our most recent catalog - #369 - released for August, 2026
