Facing a formidable field and treacherous Scottish coastal gales, Hagen opened the tournament with an extraordinary, record-shattering round of 67 (−5)—a score virtually unheard of on a links course in that era, which established an immediate four-stroke cushion. As gale-force winds battered the coast and sent scores soaring across the field during the remaining rounds, Hagen’s rare ability to keep ball trajectories low and execute masterclass recovery shots allowed him to comfortably coast to a six-stroke victory over Johnny Farrell with a 292 total (+12).
