Background:Gari Melchers (1860–1932) was an American painter known for his realistic and later impressionistic works. Trained in Europe, he gained early fame for his religious and peasant scenes, later turning to portraits and landscapes. Highly respected, he lived in Virginia, where his home is now a museum.
