Background: The September 17, 1898, issue of Scientific American stands as a prized collector's item and an essential artifact in automotive history, primarily because its back page features another installment of the landmark advertising campaign by The Winton Motor Carriage Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Following up on their historic initial placements, this particular edition prominently showcases the iconic "Over The Hills and Far Away" headline, accompanied by a charming photograph or engraving of a well-dressed couple enjoying a ride in the horseless carriage. Recognized by archival authorities like Kane's Famous First Facts, these late-summer and autumn 1898 back-page advertisements helped popularize early American motoring to the general public, capturing the imagination of contemporary readers and early industrialists alike.
