Background:On October 17, 1941, the USS Kearny (DD-432), a U.S. Navy destroyer, was torpedoed by German submarine U-568 while escorting a convoy near Iceland, despite the United States not yet being officially involved in World War II. The attack killed 11 American sailors and wounded 22 others, marking one of the first U.S. naval losses due to German action. Occurring during U.S. efforts to aid Britain under the Lend-Lease Act, the incident heightened tensions with Germany and was cited by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as an act of war, further moving the U.S. toward full entry into the conflict.
