LaFayette coming to America... General Washington...

Item # 714390 ·

EDINBURGH EVENING COURANT, Scotland, April 19, 1777  Over one-third of page 2 is taken up with an: "Extract from a Letter from an Officer at New York to a Friend at London" which discusses the lack of clothing, food & other necessities among the people of America.
Most of another column is taken up with American content including a nice item on La Fayette with a Paris dateline: "One of the richest of our young nobility, the Marquis de la Fayette...between 19 and 20 years of age, as at his own expence, hired a frigate & provided every thing necessary for a voyage to America...He set out last week...he is to serve as a Major-General in the American army." with more (see). Also from Baltimore: "The following is an extract of a letter from General Washington to the Congress...'My last was on the 20th...that General Dickinson, with about 4000 militia, had defeated a foraging party of the enemy of an equal number...The enemy retreated with so much precipitation that General Dickinson had only an opportunity of making nine prisoners...This action happened near Somerset Court house on Milston river. General Dickinson's behaviour reflects the highest honour upon him, for though his troops were all raw, he led them through the river...and gave the enemy so severe a charge...they gave way...' ".
Still on page 2 are more reports from Hartford & Philadelphia with reports including: "...an express came to town from General Washington's headquarters in New Jersey...a party of our men...fell in with a body of the enemy..." with more on this (see)
Page 3 has a report: "...respecting General Lee: He is confined in a very decent room in the guard house; contiguous to which is a small room in which he sleeps...He is allowed all necessaries that are requisite...He is very careless in his apparel..." with a bit more.
