Small newspaper from an Alaska mining town...

Item # 712239 ·

ALASKA FORUM, Rampart, Alaska, Nov. 22, 1900  This is the volume 1, number 9 issue of a newspaper from this mining town which lasted only until 1906. Rampart is remotely located near the geographical center of Alaska, and at the 2010 census had a population of just 24. This is the northernmost of any newspaper published in Alaska.
Gregory's Union List of American Newspapers notes that only the Alaska Historical Society has scattered issues of this title.
Various local and national news but certainly an emphasis on mining items. Page 2 notes: "The Alaska Forum is published 4very Thursday in the cabin in the rear of the Collins old store near Front Street, Rampart, Aka."
During its heyday, Rampart had a newspaper, hotels, saloons, library, fire department, hospital, and a host of stores and businesses that were typical of the mining towns of that time. The boom was short-lived. New strikes elsewhere in Alaska, including Nome and Fairbanks, rapidly depleted the population. By 1903, only a Native community remained among the abandoned homes and businesses.
Four pages, 8 by 10 1/4 inches, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
