Item # 712223 ·

THE SUFFRAGIST, Washington D.C., Jan. 30, 1918

  • The Women's Suffrage movement
  • 19th Amendment sought
  • One of the last issues we have

A very significant publication which was, as noted in the cover, the "Official Weekly Organ of National Woman's Party". They would win the right to vote within two years with the historic Nineteenth Amendment.
The front page is an illustration of a woman forewarning a Senator: "Clear the Way!" Content within deals almost exclusively with the fight for the right to vote.
Twelve pages, 10 by 13 1/2 inches, never bound, very nice condition.

Background: Published on January 30, 1918—just weeks after President Woodrow Wilson declared his support for the federal amendment and the House passed it—this 12-page issue of The Suffragist captures the National Woman's Party at the apex of its political pressure campaign, turning its full force toward a resistant Senate. As the official weekly organ of Alice Paul's NWP, the issue features a front-page illustration warning a Senator to "Clear the Way!", framing the publication's sharp focus on holding individual lawmakers accountable, documenting ongoing White House pickets, and driving the strategy that ultimately secured women's voting rights through the Nineteenth Amendment two years later.
