On the memory of General Washington...

Item # 710168 ·
THE BALANCE & COLUMBIAN REPOSITORY, Hudson, New York, June 29, 1802

* re. death of George Washington

Fully half of page 5 is taken up with a detailed: "Tribute" to the: "Memory of Washington" which includes details on efforts to raise money for a proper monument to George Washington.
Eight pages, 9 by 10 3/4 inches, good condition.

Background: This June 29, 1802 issue of The Balance, and Columbian Repository serves as a poignant cultural artifact from the Early Republic, capturing a fractured nation grappling with the immediate legacy of George Washington just two and a half years after his death. The extensive fundraising "Tribute" highlighting the struggle to erect a proper monument reflects the intense partisan gridlock of the era; while Federalists championed a grand state-funded memorial to cementing national identity, Jeffersonian Republicans aggressively blocked public funding out of fear that it bordered on monarchical idolatry, making this grassroots, citizen-led financial push historically significant as a precursor to the eventual realization of the Washington Monument.
