Cornwallis surrenders at Yorktown...

Item # 710126

THE TOWN & COUNTRY MAGAZINE OR UNIVERSAL REPOSITORY, London, December, 1781  Certainly the most historic report in this issue--and perhaps in any issue from the Revolutionary War--is that near the back of the issue under the "Domestic Intelligence".
It begins with a letter from Sir Henry Clinton to Lord George Germain dated at New York, Nov. 17, in which he is compelled to report the dire news of Cornwallis' fate at Yorktown.
Near the beginning it notes: "In my last...I had the honour to acquaint your lordship with my fears respecting the fate of the army in Virginia. It now gives me the deepest concern to inform you that they were too well founded..." with more.
And what follows is the historic letter from Lord Cornwallis datelined "York-Town, Oct. 20, 1781" which begins with the famous sentence: "I have the mortification to inform your excellency, that I have been forced to give up the posts of York and Gloucester, and to surrender the troops under my command, by capitulation on the 19th, as prisoners of war, to the combined forces of America and France..." with much, much more. This letter continues, with much detail, to take near two pages where it is signed at its conclusion: Cornwallis.
Following this is the letter from Cornwallis to General Washington dated Oct. 18, which begins: "I agree to open a treaty of capitulation upon the basis of the garrisons of York & Gloucester..." with further terms, signed: Cornwallis. And then the "Return of the killed & wounded from the 28th of September to the 19th of October, 1781".
And what follows this are the: "Articles of the Capitulation entered into between his Excellency General Washington, Commander in Chief of the combined Armies of America and France...and the Right Hon. Earl Cornwallis..." with more. Included are all 14 article of this history treaty that essentially ended the Revolutionary War.
A wonderful issue, not only including Clinton's letter announcing the surrender, but Cornwallis' own letter with considerable detail, Cornwallis's letter to Washington agreeing to surrender, plus the full text of the Articles of Capitulation.
