In the "...interests of the pioneers of California..."

Item # 710033 ·
THE PIONEER, San Jose, California, Aug. 2, 1879  The masthead notes: "Devoted To The Interests Of The Pioneers of California And the Resources of the Golden State."
The masthead is one of the more graphic we have seen, featuring three vignettes: one of settlers traveling, one of a bear, and another of a detailed mining scene.  The front page has part 8 of a continuing series: "Hoisting the Americn Flag at Monterey, Yerba Buena, Sonoma, Bodega, Sutter's Fort, San Jose and San Juan, by Order of John Drake Sloan, Commanding Pacific Squadron".
This title is not recorded in Gregory's "Union List of Newspapers".
Four pages, good condition but a bit fragile so it should be handled carefully.
