NEW YORK TIMES, Sept. 12, 1865 The front page has: "Trial of Capt. Wirz" "Monday's Proceedings" "A Long Discussion About Witnesses--Testimony of Maj. Gen. Wilson and Others" with the coverage taking nearly 2 columns.
Henry Wirz was a Confederate Army officer during the Civil War. He was the commandant of Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp in Georgia where nearly 13,000 Union Army prisoners of war died as a result of inhumane conditions. After the war, Wirz was tried and executed for conspiracy and murder relating to his command of the camp.
The front page also has much concerning Reconstruction with: "A Large Southern Delegation In the White House" "Nine of the Late Rebellious States Represented" "Important Speech of Mr. Johnson in Reply" "He Point Out & Deplores Their Errors" "How They are to be Restored to the Union".
