President Thomas Jefferson signs seven Acts of Congress...

Item # 708166 ·

NATIONAL AEGIS, Worcester, Massachusetts, Aug. 10, 1808

  • President Thomas Jefferson
  • Acts of United States Congress

Half of the front page is taken up with seven Acts of Congress, one concerning the sale of lands in the United States, one for the sale of public arms, another to authorize the President to suspend the Embargo, etc. Each is signed in type by the President: Th. Jefferson.
Four pages, various foxing throughout, a bit irregular at some margins, good condition.

Background: The front page of the August 10, 1808 issue of Worcester’s National Aegis—a Democratic-Republican organ founded specifically to champion Thomas Jefferson’s administration against New England’s staunchly Federalist press—dedicates roughly half of its prime real estate to seven official Acts of Congress, each bearing the printed signature of President Th. Jefferson. Central to these legislative texts is an authorization permitting the President to suspend the highly contentious Embargo Act of 1807, a landmark policy passed during the Napoleonic Wars that halted foreign trade to protect American shipping from British and French impressment and seizure. Because the economic blockade hit New England’s maritime and merchant economy particularly hard, the inclusion of this law alongside acts regulating the sale of public lands and arms made this issue an essential source of civic and economic intelligence, reflecting the era's reliance on local newspapers for official government records and crucial national developments.
