Background: The February 19, 1979 issue of The Village Voice features the iconic front-page cover story "The Worst Domino" by radical press columnists Alexander Cockburn and James Ridgeway. Published immediately after the culmination of the Iranian Revolution, the multi-page editorial critically dissects the fall of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the rise of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, subverting traditional Cold War "domino theory" rhetoric to argue that the collapse of U.S. client states in the Middle East was an inevitable consequence of Washington’s short-sighted foreign energy policies and corporate ties. In terms of rarity, original physical copies of this 120-page newsweekly are exceptionally scarce on the primary and secondary markets today, as short-lived ephemeral newsprint papers were rarely preserved by everyday readers at the time—making surviving archive-provenance issues highly sought after by historical collectors of counterculture press and Middle Eastern geopolitical ephemera.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because there was really no reason to save it at the time.
The Village Voice was an American counterculture newspaper known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. It introduced free-form, high-spirited, and passionate journalism into the public discourse - a tradition it maintained throughout its 60+ year history. It is quite common to find great political cartoons, satirical cartoons and articles, thought-provoking editorials, and ads and reviews for both concerts and theater productions - both on and off Broadway. Many iconic writers and musicians credit their appearance in The Village Voice for at least a portion of their success.
Complete in 120 pages, minor margin wear, generally in nice condition.

Provenance: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive.

Alert: Many issues of The Village Voice contain articles and/or photos which some consider offensive, and are certainly inappropriate for children. If purchasing, please do so with discretion.
