An anti-war newspaper in Ohio...
Item # 707579
·
THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, April 22, 1863 This was an anti-war newspaper that insisted that slavery should not be abolished, so much of its content has an anti-North bias.
Among the articles are: "The Civil War In America" takes nearly a full page; "The Threatened Military Despotism" "War News of the Week" "A Talk with Rebels Under a Flag of Truce--Secesh Anxious for the Health of Sam Medary and The Crisis" "Despotism in Missouri" and more.
Eight pages, very nice condition.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
