background: The Confederate ironclad ram CSS Albemarle played a notable role in the Civil War around Plymouth, North Carolina. Built in 1862–1863 at a hidden shipyard on the Roanoke River, Albemarle was a formidable threat to Union forces because of its iron-armored hull and shallow draft, which allowed it to operate effectively in North Carolina’s rivers and sounds. In April 1864, the Albemarle successfully attacked Union naval forces at Plymouth, sinking the USS Southfield and forcing the Union flotilla to retreat, allowing Confederate forces to temporarily recapture Plymouth.
