Proclamation by Albert Sidney Johnston... Brigham Young...
THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 31, 1861 This was an anti-war newspaper that insisted that slavery should not be abolished, so much of its content has an anti-North bias.
Among the various articles on the front page: "War Strengthens a Nation!" "Proclamation of Gen. Johnston to the People of Kentucky" signed A. S. Johnston; "More of the Horrors of the Kanawha Valley...". Other articles within include: "Minnesota Senators on Fremont's Proclamation" "The President's Opinion of Abolitionists" "The War in Missouri!"
Also of interest is: "Telegraphic Correspondence Between Brigham Young and President Lincoln--Line Open to Utah!" This relates to the completion of a telegraph line to Salt Lake City, with letters signed in type by: Brigham Young, Abraham Lincoln, and two others.
Eight pages, water staining throughout does not deter readability, otherwise good.
Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
